Despicable Me

Despicable me is one of the increasingly popular cartoon films which has an appeal to all ages. The producer is that of the Ice Age movies and so has experience of working in this genre.

It is in 3D which adds to the appeal for family viewing and as it is Universal's first time at trying this format it is excusably good. It did promise great things and that can sometimes result in a disappointing result. In this film this is unlikely to be the case as not only the effects but the humour and storyline are likely to be appealing to all.

The 3D effects have been used very well and even through the ending titles they continue, so it is well worth sticking it out until the end. The film is a comedy about a character Gru who is a super-villain and has many yellow creatures who work for him. Gru, is voiced by Steve Carell and is finding things financially tough as he cannot afford to fund his latest inventions. He then discovers that there is a new super-villain in town, Vector who is very popular. Gru therefore comes up with a plan to get hold of Vector's new gadget and steal the moon. The story is light hearted and unbelievable, as you would expect from a film about super villains and typically ends up with the villain softening at the end. Although it is not up to the standard of the Pixar animated films, it still has great promise and the story;line is enjoyable as are the 3D effects.

Despicable Me movie

Hopefully, though it will be first of an improving batch of animated films from Universal and they may becoming more daring with their story lines and effects as they do more of them. Despite this, the film is perfectly watchable and in fact has some memorable comedy moments. The jokes appeal to all ages, although some are strictly for the grown ups but unnoticed by the children in the style of many modern children's films.  There is already a planned sequel which just shows that many people have already enjoyed this film and with  additional cast members including Jason Segel and Julie Andrews you certainly should do too. With the film already having been in cinemas a while, it is a good idea to go and see it as soon as you can as, unless you have a 3D television, you will not be able to see the full special effects again.
