Avatar Movie Review

Avatar, which is the much anticipated epic about an alien world, brought to us by James Cameron (Titanic), features a cast made up of Hollywood stars and new coming talent to bring us a fresh, new kind of movie.

The cast is led by Sam Worthington, who plays the hero Jake Sully. Zoe Saldana plays the role of Neytiri, the princess of the natives who inhabit this new planet that they call Pandora. Sigourney Weaver reunites with James Cameron in this movie as Dr. Grace Augustine, who is a scientist who wants to study the natives, their planet, and the possibility of finding a peaceful, diplomatic solution between the humans and the Na’vi, who are the natives.

Sam Worthington - Avatar Movie

This epic tale about a warrior (Jake) and his struggle to choose a side, is not a new one, but it is brought to us with such emotion in this tale that it actually feels new. Watching this movie, I found myself actually torn between the two sides. On one hand there are the humans, who just want to mine a precious mineral from beneath the planets surface. But then, you meet the Na’vi, whose home and legacy will be destroyed when their home tree is taken down by the mining equipment. As you learn more about these fascinating creatures, you start to sympathize with them. Also, the love interest between Jake and the princess, even though they are alien, is incredibly complex, simple, and beautiful at the same time. You will find yourself enchanted by this group, and will find yourself being pulled right along into the love story. When he falls in love with the female, he crosses a line that means life and his decision becomes much more difficult.

Jack and Neytiri in Avatar Movie

This movie also deals with humans, and the ugly fact that is actually true - humans are beings who are VERY technologically advanced, but it comes at a cost. They destroy their domain, and are usually forced to move on and find a new one from which to harvest new resources. In this movie, earth is no longer green, and it is actually in need of the resources on this planet to even move forward. This movie brings a unique twist in the way that the humans are the invading “aliens”, and the Na’vi are the ones who are fighting for their planet. It is like independence day, but in reverse! (also, the aliens in Independence day were no-where near as sensual as the beautiful Neytiri. )

Jake learns very quickly that these people have more to offer than the rich deposits of resources in their planet, and that they have suddenly become more important to him than any humans in his life. But will the choice he has made threaten to destroy him right along with the natives that he has signed on to work against? That is for you to find out when you see Avatar, the new epic by James Cameron that will leave you absolutely breathless. Ten stars AND two thumbs up for the best movie to be released in YEARS!

Living in a Wildlife Sanctuary, amongst 7 Primitive Tribal Groups, Mudumalai, South India.Avatar is personal. I was amazed at first at the sheer cinematic , but right from the introduction of the Na'vi, it was something I could relate to. I was pulled into deep into it. The Indian media have done a commendable job, by drawing parallels between Avatar and the Environment. In Orrisa, the Niyamgiri hills are venerated by the tribal s, which has been leased out to Bauxite Mining to VEDANTA, owned by the Church Of England!!!!!Thank You, James Cameron.
